The Metro Theater Returns
French In Motion loves a good story — especially when it features our inspiring members doing incredible things!
Today, we’re thrilled to share some exciting news: the nonprofit Upper West Side Cinema Center has officially purchased the iconic Metro Theater for $6.9 million!
This historic Art Deco gem on Broadway & 99th Street, closed since 2005, is about to be reborn as a five-screen theater with a lobby lounge and public café. Once the heart of the UWS's art house cinema scene, the Metro is returning to life — and we’re here for it!
A huge shoutout to longtime French in Motion member Adeline Monzier
— former U.S. rep for Unifrance and guest programmer at Metrograph @Upper West Side Cinema Center — who’s co-leading this amazing project with independent film producer Ira Deutchman. Together, they founded the Upper West Side Cinema Center nonprofit, with a dream team of advisors including Martin Scorsese, Ethan Hawke, John Turturro, and more.
In a time when culture matters more than ever, this revival is proof of what passionate, creative people can make happen. We're so proud to support Adeline and celebrate stories like this that inspire and uplift.
Today, culture is the big winner — and we couldn’t be happier.
The Metro is back — and so is the magic of cinema on the Upper West Side.
